The Wedding Song, as suggested by its title, belongs to the genre of ancient Greek epithalamia, or wedding hymns. These poems were typically performed chorally during wedding festivities and are characterized by their celebratory tone, invocations to deities associated with marriage such as Hera, Aphrodite, and Hymenaios, and blessings for the couple's future happiness, fertility, and prosperity. No specific, standalone epic poem by this exact title is attested in the surviving corpus of Greek literature, and it is not listed among the fragmentary works of known epic poets.
