Sources & Acknowledgments

Most of the Greek literary record is not openly available online in readily readable, downloadable format.

The mission of the Eulogikon project is to provide the general public with easy access to these ancient texts, in a form that they can keep, store, mark up themselves, and read from their computer or mobile device or e-reader.

There are multiple sources of assiduously marked up annotated records of the documentary transmission However almost none of it is in a format that can be rendered directly on a web page, converted to PDF, Word, or EPUB.

Much of the corpus sits behind paywalls, restricted scholarly databases, partial-preview readers, or interfaces that release only a few lines at a time.

What is publicly accessible survives as poor scans of antique books, noisy OCR, corrupt PDFs, inconsistent XML, Beta Code, broken markup, and incomplete transcriptions.

As such, the interested reader must hunt around multiple sources to find a readable copy of what they're looking for.

Eulogikon is not merely a re-transmission of pre-prepared texts. Every text in Eulogikon has been worked upon.

The work includes extraction, OCR, VLM-assisted correction, conversion from broken HTML or XML, Unicode normalization, repair of broken words and lines, removal of markup noise, regularization of author and work metadata, preservation of useful references, and restructuring for reading, citation, search, and computational use.

Removing line references from within the body of the text is, by itself, a gargantuan task; before you start on mid-word hyphenation at line breaks, undetectable paragraph breaks, page breaks mid-sentence with page numbers and footnotes inserted between them. And that is before you start correcting OCR errors, editorial markers, and editorial commentary in English, Latin, and German inserted into the body of the Greek.

Where existing projects have made Greek texts available, they are acknowledged below. They provide some of the base raw material. None of them approximates the finished product. Given that most of our works are hybrids derived from various sources, it would be disingenuous to point to any one of them as the definitive source of any individual text. Not only are they not the same texts, but they are also not the same kinds of texts.

This is a different kind of project than that being engaged in by the organisations below.

They are in the business of annotating these texts, and we are in the business of removing those annotations.

They are in the business of providing a concrete record of the history of the transmission of the texts, We are in the business of providing the public with portable, readable copies of common property.

Professionally encoded scholarly data, apparatus-heavy editions, OCR scans, raw text and line-referenced source files are valuable resources, and they can be downloaded.

They are not, however, the same kind of textual object as clean, portable reading copies.

The purpose of Eulogikon is that each work should be available on a stable web page, readable in the browser, printable, and available as a clean PDF for personal use.
