Zosimus interprets these chromatic phenomena as stages in both material transmutation and the practitioner's concurrent spiritual purification and enlightenment. Composed in late Roman Egypt, a major center for the discipline, the treatise synthesizes Egyptian craft traditions with Greek philosophical and mystical religious thought. Modern scholarship interprets it as a guide for fellow initiates, framing the alchemical art as a path to spiritual liberation. The text reflects strong influences from contemporary Gnostic and Hermetic traditions, in which the manipulation of matter was seen as parallel to the process of freeing the divine spirit within. Only a portion of Zosimus's original corpus survives, and the Interpretation of Lights is preserved fragmentarily in later Greek manuscripts, most notably within a Byzantine compilation dating from the 10th or 11th century.
