Erythraean Paean Found at the City of Dion

Ἐρυθραῖος Παιὰν εὑρεθεὶς ἐν Δίῳ

The Erythraean Paean Found at the City of Dion is a cult hymn inscribed on a marble stele discovered at the sanctuary of Zeus Olympios at Dion in Pieria. The inscription preserves two separate paeans, the first dedicated to Zeus Olympios and the second to the Mother of the Gods, or Kybele. Each hymn is structured with a recurring refrain, the first comprising five strophes and the second three. Composed in a literary Doric dialect with Aeolic and epic influences, their formal structure indicates they were intended for choral performance within a ritual context at this major Macedonian religious center.

The hymns function as invocations, calling upon and praising the respective deities. The paean to Zeus Olympios celebrates his cosmic dominion, his role as the bringer of rain, and his fatherhood of gods and men. The hymn to the Mother of the Gods emphasizes her chthonic and fertile aspects, connecting her to the earth, mountains, wild nature, and the fostering of growth. Both compositions appeal for divine protection and salvation, employing the traditional ritual cry "ie Paian" as a refrain for deliverance.

The work survives solely as an epigraphic text. The stele, dated paleographically to the late third or early second century BCE, was found broken but has been reconstructed; it is now housed in the Epigraphical Museum in Athens. There is no independent manuscript tradition. This inscription is a crucial primary source for Hellenistic religion and poetry, providing direct evidence for the performance practice, formal structure, and dialect of cult hymns. The label "Erythraean" suggests a link to the oracle of Apollo at Erythrae, indicating these texts were considered authoritative, possibly oracular compositions used in state worship at Dion, reflecting the syncretic religious practices of the period.
