As a successful early practitioner of Old Comedy, Magnes was a prize-winning competitor at the City Dionysia. The fragments do not originate from a single play but are excerpts from various lost comedies, thematically grouped by modern editors for their apparent references to quotidian Athenian experiences. Preserved only through citation by later authors such as Athenaeus, these snippets touch upon subjects like specific foods, musical modes, and popular songs.
