11.(t) Γένος Ἀράτου τοῦ ποιητοῦ Ἄρατος ὁ ποιητὴς γένει μὲν ἦν ἀπὸ Σόλων τῆς Κιλικίας, πατρὸς δὲ Ἀθηνοδώρου, μητρὸς δὲ Λητοφίλας. γένους δὲ ἐγένετο πατρὸς ἐπιφανοῦς καὶ ἐν πολλοῖς εὐδοκίμου καὶ ἐν πολέμῳ ἀριστεύσαντος· ἠλευθέρωσε γοῦν τὴν πατρίδα πολλάκις. [ἐν] τοῖς χρόνοις δὲ ἐγένετο κατὰ Φιλάδελφον τὸν βασιλέα, συνήκμαζε δὲ Ἀλεξάνδρῳ τῷ Αἰτωλῷ καὶ Φιλητᾷ καὶ Διονυσίῳ τῷ φιλοσόφῳ 〈τῷ〉 εἰς ἡδονὰς μεταθεμένῳ, οὗ καθηγήσατο τὰ μαθηματικὰ ὁ Ἄρατος. καὶ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ ἕτερα συντάγματα κατὰ λεπτόν, ἄξια δὲ μνήμης τέσσαρα, ἓν μὲν Ἰατρικῶν δυνάμεων, δεύτερον Κανόνος κατατομή, τρίτον τὰ Φαινόμενα, τέταρτον Περὶ ἀνατολῆς, ὅ φασί τινες μὴ εἶναι Ἀράτου, ἀλλὰ Ἡγησιάνακτος.
13 ἐνίοις δὲ ἀρέσκει Ἄρατον γεγονέναι ἰατρὸν τῇ ἐπιστή μῃ, φίλον δὲ γνήσιον γεγονότα Νικάνδρου τοῦ μαθηματικοῦ γράψαι τε τὰ Θηριακὰ καὶ δοῦναι Νικάνδρῳ καὶ λαβεῖν παρ’ αὐτοῦ τὰ Φαινόμενα καὶ ἴδια ὑπογράψαι. ἔστι δὲ τριχῶς ἡ τῶν Φαινομένων αὐτοῦ πραγματεία, καταστέρωσις καὶ περὶ συνανατελλόντων καὶ συνδυνόντων καὶ προγνώσεις διὰ σημείων. ζηλωτὴς δὲ ἐγένετο τοῦ ὁμηρικοῦ χαρακτῆρος κατὰ τὴν τῶν ἐπῶν σύνθεσιν. ἔνιοι δὲ αὐτὸν λέγουσιν Ἡσιόδου μᾶλλον ζηλωτὴν γεγονέναι. καθάπερ γὰρ ὁ Ἡσίοδος τῶν Ἔργων καὶ Ἡμερῶν ἀπαρχόμενος τῶν ὕμνων ἀπὸ Διὸς ἤρξατο λέγων „Μοῦσαι Πιερίηθεν ἀοιδῇσι κλείουσαι, /δεῦτε Δί’ ἐννέπετε“, οὕτω καὶ ὁ Ἄρατος τῆς ποιήσεως ἀρχόμενος ἔφη „ἐκ Διὸς ἀρχώμεσθα“· τά τε περὶ τοῦ χρυσοῦ γένους ὁμοίως τῷ Ἡσιόδῳ, 〈καὶ〉 κατὰ πολλοὺς ἄλλους μύθους. Βοηθὸς δὲ ὁ Σιδώνιος ἐν τῷ πρώτῳ περὶ αὐτοῦ φησιν οὐχ Ἡσιόδου αὐτὸν ζηλωτήν, ἀλλ’ Ὁμήρου γεγονέναι· τὸ γὰρ πλάσμα τῆς ποιήσεως μεῖζον ἢ κατὰ Ἡσίοδον. πολλοὶ μὲν γὰρ καὶ ἄλλοι Φαινό μενα ἔγραψαν, καὶ Κλεόπατρος καὶ Σμίνθης καὶ Ἀλέ ξανδρος ὁ Αἰτωλὸς καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Ἐφέσιος καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Λυκαΐτης καὶ Ἀνακρέων καὶ Ἀρτεμίδωρος καὶ Ἵππαρχος καὶ ἄλλοι πολλοί, ἀλλ’ ὅμως λαμπροτέρα γέγονε πάντων ἡ Ἀράτου δύναμις ἐπισκο τήσασα τοῖς ἄλλοις. ἐχρήσατο γὰρ τῇ τῶν φυσικῶν φιλοσόφων δυνάμει. εἶναι γάρ φησι τὸ διοικοῦν τὸν κόσμον ἀκριβῶς περί τε τοὺς ἐνιαυτοὺς καὶ μῆνας καὶ ἡμέρας καὶ ὥρας καὶ ἀνατολάς τε καὶ δύσεις ἡλίου καὶ σελήνης καὶ τῶν πέντε ἀστέρων. λέγει δὲ καὶ τὴν γῆν σφαιροειδοῦς σημείου τάξιν ἐπέχειν πρὸς τὸν ὅλον κόσμον, ἀκινητόν τε ὑπάρχειν, οὖσαν σταδίων μυριάδων εἴκοσι πέντε καὶ δισχιλίων. λέγουσι δέ τινες καὶ περὶ τοῦ προοιμίου ὅτι τοῦτο τὸ νῦν ὂν οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῦ, ἀλλ’ ἐπιγεννητόν, τὸ δὲ ἀληθινὸν αὐτοῦ φασιν εἶναι τοῦτο· „Ἀγκλείδη, ξείνων ἱερὸν θάλοσ“. καὶ περὶ μὲν τοῦ βίου καὶ τοῦ γένους καὶ τῆς παιδείας καὶ τῆς ἀρετῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ τῶν συνακμασάντων εἰρήκαμεν.
