_The Confused Dinner Guest_ is a comedy by the poet Straton, a figure of Middle Comedy whose work survives only in fragments. The play’s title, which translates as “Fragment” or “Extract,” directly acknowledges its incomplete state of preservation. Based on the surviving text, the plot appears to center on a comic misunderstanding at a symposium, a typical setting for comedies of this period. The fragment depicts a host bewildered by his guest’s use of obscure, elevated language; the guest inquires about the number of “mortals” invited, asks whether the host is sacrificing a “broad-browed ox” or “sheep,” and employs other poetic or riddling terms that the plainspoken host fails to comprehend. This generates a comedy of manners built on social awkwardness and the clash between intellectual pretension and conventional hospitality.
