Composed in the Doric dialect for public performance, often by choruses of young women at Spartan religious festivals, these surviving verses are preserved not as a single work but as a modern scholarly compilation. The fragments derive from two primary sources: quotations by later ancient authors and, most significantly, papyrus discoveries at Oxyrhynchus in Egypt. No complete poem survives intact; the collection consists of disparate passages that collectively illuminate Alcman's artistry. The content encompasses mythological allusions, vivid depictions of the natural world, and reflections on human experience. Of particular note are metapoetic passages in which the poet contemplates the essence of song and the source of poetic inspiration.
