The Orphic Corpus

10 works

Orphica is the corpus transmitted under Orpheus, not a biography of the singer. The Derveni papyrus comments on an Orphic theogony: Zeus took strength and the glorious daimon from his father; Olympus and Time are the same, and those who think Olympus and heaven are the same err, because heaven cannot be longer or broader, but Time can be called long. Erinyes are servants of the gods who punish men; initiates pour water and milk and offer countless popana because souls are countless.

The Hymns open Orpheus to Musaeus: learn the most august sacrifice. King Zeus and Earth and the holy flames of the Sun, the Moon’s sacred light and all the Stars, Poseidon, Persephone, Demeter, Artemis, Pythian Apollo, dancing Dionysus — then Hecate of the roads, three-formed, and Prothyraia of childbirth. Other hosted works: the Argonautica, lithica and proclamations on stones, an astrological fragment, a cosmogony of the soul, medicinal herbs.

The slot is those Orphic books this library holds.
