Homilies by Synesius of Cyrene

The Homilies of Synesius of Cyrene constitute a collection of sermons delivered during his service as Bishop of Ptolemais in the early fifth century. These works document his pastoral activity and exemplify his distinctive intellectual project of synthesizing deep Neoplatonic philosophical commitments with Christian theological doctrine. The extant homilies, preserved within the Byzantine manuscript tradition and included in collections such as the Greek Patrology, engage with themes central to Synesius's thought. These include the psychē's journey under divine pronoianic and patristic exegesis, practical pastoral care and ethical instruction for his congregation, and a reasoned defence of the value of traditional Hellenic education within Christian life. As a body of work, the Homilies stand as a prime example of the late antique "philosopher-bishop" model, illustrating a significant cultural transition where Hellenic intellectual traditions were actively integrated into the framework of early Christian practice and pastoral leadership.
