The poem directly addresses the deceased with consolatory promises of eternal life, employing a rich tapestry of Christian sacramental symbolism. It speaks of partaking in "the honey-sweet food of the Savior," an allusion to the Eucharist, and of drinking from "inexhaustible waters," imagery associated with baptism. Its most notable feature is the invocation of the "Divine Race of the Heavenly Fish," a clear reference to the Ichthys symbol. This fish acrostic served as an early cryptogram for the Greek phrase meaning "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior." The public and permanent nature of this inscribed monument is interpreted by scholars as evidence of a growing confidence and institutional presence of Christian identity in Roman Gaul, likely from a period following the most intense phases of persecution.
The poem survives solely through this singular archaeological artifact, as it was not transmitted through medieval manuscript tradition. The inscribed stone, which contains the complete text, is housed in the Rolin Museum in Autun. It provides a direct material witness to the beliefs, poetic expression, and devotional practices of an early Christian community on the frontiers of the Roman Empire.
