The Stoic Ethical Fragments is a modern designation for a collection of thirteen fragmentary passages concerning the ethical doctrines of the early Stoic philosopher Herillus of Carthage. These fragments are not preserved as a continuous text but are known indirectly through later doxographers, most prominently in the biographical compilation of Diogenes Laërtius. They represent a notable heterodox position within the foundational period of the Stoic school. The core of Herillus's departure from orthodox Stoicism lies in his definition of the supreme end of life. While mainstream Stoicism held that the chief good was "living in accordance with nature," Herillus argued that the ultimate end was "knowledge," defined as a firm and unshakable mental disposition to live in accordance with correct reasoning, or to "live scientifically." He further maintained that other proposed ends, including the orthodox Stoic goal, were merely subordinate ends, valuable only as instrumental means for attaining the primary end of knowledge. The original works of Herillus, which included titles such as On Training, On the Passions, and Teacher, are lost. Their content survives solely through this secondary transmission in the doxographical tradition, primarily from the third century CE. Herillus's influence within Stoicism was limited; his views were considered a dissenting minority position and were explicitly argued against by later, definitive Stoic figures like Chrysippus. Nevertheless, the fragments retain significant historical value for illustrating the scope of internal doctrinal debate and diversity of thought during the early development of Stoic philosophy.
