On Circumstances is a philosophical treatise by the 3rd-century BCE Cynic teacher Teles of Megara. 52 (1t) ΕΚ ΤΩΝ ΤΕΛΗΤΟΣ ΠΕΡΙ ΠΕΡΙΣΤΑΣΕΩΝ Ἡ τύχη ὥσπερ ποιήτριά τις οὖσα παντοδαπὰ ποιεῖ πρόσωπα, ναυαγοῦ, πτωχοῦ, φυγάδος, ἐνδόξου, ἀδόξου. δεῖ οὖν τὸν ἀγαθὸν ἄνδρα πᾶν ὅ τι ἂν αὕτη περιθῇ καλῶς ἀγωνίζεσθαι. ναυαγὸς γέγονας, εὖ τὸν ναυαγόν· πένης ἐξ εὐπόρου, εὖ τὸν πένητα· ἄρμενος ἐν μικροῖσι καὶ ἄρμενος ἐν μεγάλοισιν· ἀρκούμενος καὶ ἐσθῆτι τῇ τυχούσῃ καὶ διαίτῃ καὶ διακονίᾳ, ὥσπερ ὁ Λαέρτης γρηὶ σὺν ἀμφιπόλῳ, ἥ οἱ βρῶσίν τε πόσιν τε παρτίθει· καὶ ἐκοιμᾶτο χαμαὶ ἐπὶ στιβάδος· φύλλων κεκλιμένων χθαμαλαὶ βεβλήατο εὐναί.
53 ἀρκεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα καὶ εἰς τὸ προσηνῶς καὶ εἰς τὸ ὑγιεινῶς, ἐὰν μή τις τρυφᾶν βούληται· οὐ γὰρ ἐν γαστρὸς βορᾷ τὸ χρηστὸν εἶναι οὐδέ γε ἐν χλανίδος κατασκευῇ οὐδὲ ἐν στρωμνῆς μαλακότητι. οὐκ ἀηδῶς γὰρ Εὐριπίδης τρυφῇ δέ τοι πολλῶν ἐδεστῶν μηχανὰς θηρεύομεν· καὶ οὐ μόνον ἐδεστῶν, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὀσφραντῶν καὶ ἀκουστῶν. οὐ δεῖ δὲ τρυφᾶν οὐδὲν τῶν πραγμάτων μὴ φερόντων, ἀλλ’ ὥσπερ οἱ ναυτικοὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀνέμους καὶ πρὸς τὴν περίστασιν ὁρῶντες· ἐκποιεῖ, χρῆσαι· οὐκ ἐκποιεῖ, παῦσαι. καὶ ὥσπερ ἐπὶ στρατείας ὁ μὲν ἵππον ἔχων ἱππεὺς ἀγωνίζεται, ὁ δὲ ὅπλα ὁπλίτης, ὁ δὲ μηδὲν ἔχων ψιλός, καὶ ὥσπερ ἐκεῖσε ὅταν ἐπικέωνται οἱ πολέμιοι καὶ βάλλωσιν, εἰς τὰ ὅπλα ἀναχωρεῖς ψιλὸς ὤν· οὕτως αὖ δεῦρο ἐπίκειται ἐνίοτε πόλεμος, ἀπορία ἀρρωστία, ἀναχώρει εἰς μονοσιτίαν, εἰς αὐτοδιακονίαν, εἰς τρίβωνα, ἔσχατον εἰς ᾅδου.
