The corpus survives exclusively in its original, often damaged, state on the papyrus fragments and ostraca recovered by archaeologists, largely from Egypt’s arid environment. Unlike canonical literary texts, these practical handbooks were not transmitted through medieval manuscript copying; their preservation is entirely fortuitous. Scholars regard the collection as an invaluable resource for understanding the operational dimensions of ancient religious practice and the dynamics of cross-cultural exchange, illuminating a world where the boundaries between magic, religion, and medicine were permeable and indistinct.
