Another explains the origin of the name for the Laconian town of Sparta, deriving it from these same "Sown Men" who were exiled there. A further passage offers a variant account of the death of Amphion and the sparing of Niobe, attributing the murder of Amphion to an ambush by the Spartoi as he traveled to perform a sacrifice. The text was preserved indirectly as quotations in later antiquarian sources. As a minor Atthidographer, Timagoras's work served as a source for later lexicographers and mythographers seeking rare mythological variants.
