Φίλιππος ὁ Θεαγγελεύς
Philippus of Theangela
1 work

Philippus of Theangela was a Hellenistic historian from the city of Theangela in Caria, active in the late fourth or early third century BCE. He witnessed the region's transition from Persian to Macedonian control following the conquests of Alexander the Great. No personal details of his life survive; his identity and work are known only through later citations and a single surviving fragment, which place him within the tradition of local Carian historiography.

His sole attested work is the Carian History, a regional history now lost. Its single extant fragment is preserved by the later author Athenaeus.

Philippus represents the Hellenistic trend of local history, or horography. His Carian History contributed ethnographical and historical knowledge of Caria to the Greek-speaking world. It provided material for later compilers and offers a glimpse into the historiographical practices of the period focused on regional subjects.
