The scholia on Xenophon’s Anabasis gloss the march lemma by lemma. σταθμός is a military lodging and also the posting-houses of messengers from city to city; ἐρυμνά are places made secure; the Lyceum is the Athenian gymnasium where they trained before the war; a στλεγγίς is a scraper, used also to draw water. φοινικοῦς tunics are scarlet: the Greeks wear them to war, Aristotle says, because the colour is manly and because blood-colour trains men not to fear the flow of blood.
Later notes locate Thapsacus on the Euphrates, mark that the river is fordable, and explain mill-donkeys (ὄνοι ἀλέται) as what Attic speakers call millstones — a gloss some manuscripts flag as a later insertion.
The slot is that classroom apparatus on the Anabasis, not a missing commentator-author.
