Creophylus of Ephesus wrote Horoi of the Ephesians. Athenaeus 7 quotes the foundation: the settlers, hard-pressed for a site, asked the god where to plant the city. The oracle: settle where a fish shall show and a wild boar lead. At the spring Hypelaeus and the sacred harbour, fishermen were cooking; a fish leapt with the coals into brush, which caught, and a boar in the thicket ran up Mount Tracheia and was speared where Athena’s temple later stood. In the twenty-second year the Ephesians crossed from the island, founded Tracheia and the parts toward Coressus, and set Artemis’s temple on the agora and Pythian Apollo’s at the harbour.
