Basilis wrote Indica. Athenaeus (9) quotes book 2: the small men who fight the cranes use partridges as mounts. Agatharchides (in Photius) pairs him with Hecataeus as an eastern geographer. Pliny (NH 6.35) lists Basilis among those who wrote the measure of Meroë, after Dalion, Aristocreon, and Bion.
The fragments are collected in Müller's Fragments of the Greek Historians (vol. 4, p. 346). Basilis is dated to the third or second century BCE.
The Greek is pygmies, partridges, and Meroë — Hellenistic Indica, not a historian without a subject.
