A Greek Lexicon Fragment from Paris gr. 3027

This lexicon fragment distinguishes near-synonyms. Boulēsis is of the good; prohairesis of both good and bad. Eikōn and homoiōma are for things that are by nature the same among all peoples (man, horse, lion) as painters and sculptors make them; symbolon and sēmeion are for things by convention, not the same among all — a spear raised and a trumpet among Romans is peace or war, otherwise among Persians. Morphē is of the ensouled, schēma of the soulless. A hygieinon body is one not easily turned to disease; hygies is one not now ill. Mnēmē is continuous remembrance; anamnēsis is return after forgetting.

Ochros is the man who has paleness as a hexis; the man who paled from fear is not ochros, because it changes quickly. One manthanei what he does not know and gnōrizei what he once knew and forgot. Sophocles puts syagros on a dog (from hunting boar); in Herodotus it is a proper name; others use it of a wild boar. Attic lagōs against Ionic lagōos; cups: condy Asian, strouthion Persian, kōthōn Laconian, Antigonis from the king, kotylē.
